Palm Vx Charger Adapter
The cradle is the part that the Palm Vx sits into when the battery is to be charged. The power to the cradle comes from the adapter charger.
Mains Charger
The Palm Vx charger adapter is model 91-5833 manufactured by the Motorola Corporation. The "AC Power Supply 163-0045" is designed to operate between 100 V AC and 240 V AC.
It provides dual voltage outputs, which are 4.1 V DC at 400 mA, and 6 V DC at 100 mA. It is of a switched mode design and as a result does not have a large heavy transformer inside.
Cable and DB9 Connector
As you can see, the cable from the charger adapter connects to this DB9 connector, and the cradle receives power from here.
It might appear strange, but this is probably an effort to make the desk appear less cluttered with wires, since a single wire to the cradle appears neater.

Adapter Connector
This is the connector plug from the mains adapter. As you can see, it has multiple holes as the wire carries dual power supplies. This connects to the DB9 connector.
